India-EU Free Trade Agreement (2026)
India and the European Union concluded negotiations for a comprehensive free trade agreement on January 27, 2026, at a summit in New Delhi attended by PM Modi, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa. The negotiations had originally been launched in 2007, suspended in 2013, and relaunched in 2022. The 14th and final formal negotiating round took place in October 2025. The agreement is being described as the largest trade deal ever concluded by either side, creating a combined market of 2 billion people and nearly 25% of global GDP.
- Negotiations spanned nearly two decades (2007-2026) with a suspension from 2013 to 2022
- The deal covers 20 of 24 negotiating chapters including trade in goods, services, investment protection, digital trade, and dispute settlement
- Tariffs on 96.6% of EU goods exports to India would be eliminated or reduced, saving up to 4 billion euros per year in duties
- The EU is a 27-nation bloc with a combined GDP of approximately $18-19 trillion
- India-EU bilateral trade: approximately $120-130 billion annually
Connection to this news: The trade agreement creates a significantly larger and duty-free/reduced-duty market for Indian organic exporters in the EU, which is the world's largest organic food market.
National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) — 8th Edition
The National Programme for Organic Production is India's primary framework for organic certification and export, implemented by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The 8th edition of NPOP was launched in January 2025 with significant reforms including simplified certification requirements for organic grower groups (now granted legal status replacing the Internal Control System), derogation provisions allowing potential reduction of up to three years in the land conversion period, and enhanced transparency requirements.
- NPOP was first launched in 2001; 8th edition rolled out in January 2025
- Key digital platforms: TraceNet 2.0 (upgraded online organic traceability system) and a new NPOP portal
- APEDA is the implementing agency, established under the APEDA Act, 1985
- Target: $2 billion in organic food exports by 2030
- India ranks 1st globally in number of organic producers and 2nd in organic agricultural land area
- Total area under organic cultivation in India (FY24): 7.3 million hectares
- Leading states: Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, Sikkim
Connection to this news: The Biofach showcasing and the India-EU FTA create immediate market opportunities that align with NPOP's export expansion targets, particularly given the EU's stringent but well-defined organic certification equivalence frameworks.
Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) — Collective Agricultural Marketing
Farmer Producer Organisations are legal entities formed by groups of primary producers (farmers) for collective procurement, processing, and marketing of agricultural produce. The Government of India launched the Central Sector Scheme for "Formation and Promotion of 10,000 FPOs" in 2020 with a total budgetary provision of Rs 6,865 crore. FPOs can be registered under the Companies Act 2013 (as Farmer Producer Companies), Cooperative Societies Act, or relevant state legislation. NABARD, SFAC (Small Farmers Agribusiness Consortium), and NCDC (National Cooperative Development Corporation) serve as implementing agencies.
- Target under 2020 scheme: formation of 10,000 new FPOs by 2027-28
- Each FPO to consist of minimum 300 members (100 in North-Eastern and hilly areas)
- FPOs receive equity grants of up to Rs 18 lakh and credit guarantee coverage up to Rs 2 crore
- FPOs are critical for organic certification because grower groups require collective documentation and internal control systems
- India has approximately 7,500+ registered FPOs as of 2025
Connection to this news: FPOs are participating as co-exhibitors at Biofach, reflecting their growing role in connecting smallholder organic farmers with international markets. The India-EU FTA is expected to further strengthen FPO-led organic export channels.
